A table, a chair, a bowl of fruit and a violin; what else does a man need to be happy? - Albert Einstein
You need to be aware of how to prevent identity theft when it comes to all aspects of banking. Using credit cards and debit cards, as well as making automatic payments and more, place you in potentially risky situations as there are thieves who know how to work their way and get what they want—money. Therefore, if you want to prevent identity theft, you can take many different steps.
1. When you use automated teller machines (ATMs), make sure that nobody is standing directly behind you. Someone may be using a camera cell phone to take a photo of your card number and trying to determine the password you are numbering into the machine. Even if there is no one anywhere around you, shield the screen and your hand.
2. Do not give out credit card numbers on the Internet, unless you know that it is encrypted on a secure site.
3. Shred financial and billing statements, preapproved credit card offers, and other related documents concerning banking before throwing them away.
4. Cancel credit cards you have not used in six months.
5. Opt for traveler’s checks instead of personal bank checks.
6. Carry only what is necessary when it comes to identification and credit cards.
7. Keep track of the arrival of your bills and bank statements. If something is late, call and ask about it.
8. Instead of paper checks, use direct deposit when you can.
9. Choose to pick new checks at the bank rather than having them delivered to your home.
10. Examine your banking and credit card statements for unfamiliar activity that may signal identity theft.
11. Do not give out personal or banking information out over the Internet or phone, unless you know with whom you are dealing.
12. Pay bills online through a secure site, if possible. Online banking is a growing trend, but always stay cautious, as identity theft is everywhere.
