Negotiating a Salary

Before you talk about salaries with prospective employers, you need to determine the salary range for a particular job. Therefore, take time to research the topic and go prepared to the negotiation table. It is important that you sound logical and realistic, when covering all aspects of your career.

When you know what you should be earning, you can start negotiating. Make sure that you are calm and patient. You do not need to sound demanding. While interviewing for a new position, always remember to refrain from talking about compensation unless the employer makes an offer. If you are asked about your salary requirements, it is wise to say that you are open and the figure amount is based upon the position and the total compensation package. You can also tell the employer that you would like to learn more about the duties and the challenges of the job before discussing salary. You need to be cautious when dealing with conversations about careers. If you want to be more specific, you can give the employer a salary range based upon your research. When you receive an offer, you do not need to accept it on the spot. You can simply respond by saying that you will think about it. Career choices do need some thought, and this response may get you a salary increase. Declining the job offer may also cause a salary increase, if the employer is very interested in you. He or she may come back with a more attractive compensation package. You should not use declining as a strategy, however, because the employer might just jump to the next candidate.

Regardless of the stage of salary negotiations, you need to stay positive and show that you are interested in the position. If salary is an issue, let the employer know that you are very interested in the career opportunity and the company, but that the compensation package is of concern to you. The employer may reconsider the offer, or you may need to reconsider your stance and take the job. Remember that salary increases can follow.
