How to Establish Credit

If you do not have credit, you probably know that you need it. Without credit history, it is very difficult to obtain a credit card or other type of loan. Establishing credit can be difficult, as many places would not want to give you credit, since they do not know if you are a risk or not. This places you in a tough situation. Do not stop trying, however. Here are some tips that can help you.

  • Open and maintain a bank account. You do not need a credit score to do so. Go to the local branch of a bank and set up a checking account, and even a savings account. Opening an account does not get reported to credit bureaus, but having an account history can be important to lenders deciding if they should give you a loan or credit card for the first time.
  • Show steady employment. Lenders also look at is your employment history. They want to be sure that you can be steadily employed.
  • Show stable residence. Lenders check how often you move and whether you rent or own property. Owning a home, even if it is jointly, bears more weight.
  • Have utilities in your name. You do not need credit to sign up for utilities. Have an electric, telephone, or water service bill in your name. It will not establish a credit score, but it can be of help to first-time borrowers.
  • Get a department store card. Avoiding them is a better idea, since they have high interest rates. Do not use it to splurge on items, remember to use it for the right purpose.
  • Get a secured credit card. It is another last resort option as the bank takes a deposit if you fail to make payments.
