How to Pay Off Credit Card Debt

Getting into credit card debt might be easy, but paying it off definitely is not. In order to tackle the huge task of getting rid of the debt, you need to organize your finances. First, determine how much you can afford to pay on the debt. If you have already have a budget, figure out how much money you have left over at the end of a month. If you have not started budgeting, it is a good time to do so. Add up all your income, and add up all your monthly expenses, including the minimum payment charges of your loans and credit cards. Then subtract the expenses from the income amount. The remaining number is your net income; it is what you can send to your creditors each month.

Next, you need to determine the approach you will take to pay off credit card debt. You have two good options: paying off the card with the highest interest rate first or the lowest balance first. If you pay off the credit card with highest interest rate first, you will save more money in the end. This is especially true if that credit card has the highest balance. However, it may take long to pay the balance off. In the meantime, you may lose motivation. Therefore, it might be better to take care of the card with the lowest balance first. You feel more motivated, since you can pay them off more quickly. Once you determine the method you will employ, list your debts in the order you will pay them, including the interest rates, balances, and minimum payments. Then, dedicate your net income to paying off the credit card that tops the list. Send the minimum payment to all others. Move on to the next card during the next month.
