How to Choose a School

Anyone applying for college should have a list of schools to consider for admissions. Because college is like an investment and an important part of one's life, it is crucial to go to schools that are a good fit. Many students have flexibility when choosing schools while others may be restricted by location. Regardless of where you go to college, you can take certain steps to ensure that you make the right choice for your future.

Deciding Where

A good starting point is to decide on the location. If you need to be close to home because of work, kids or other commitments, then you must choose a school that is within commuting distance. If you have the freedom to move, you can choose any location that is comfortable. The important aspect is to choose a school that offers the program or major that you need. Be sure to consider the weather, lifestyle and culture of the areas you are looking into. Although most of your time will be spent at school, you also want to make sure that you are comfortable outside of school.

Shop Around

Once you decide on a location, research the schools that are in that area. You want to choose at least five different schools to apply to in order to increase your chances of going to college. If community college is your option, look into the schools that have the best programs, faculty, and transfer rates. If a university is your goal, look at the school website to get information and to see what academic disciplines are offered. You are going to be committing anywhere from two to five years at the school and it is important to make sure it is the right one.

Visit the School

Most students visit the schools they are considering in order to get a better understanding of the campus, culture of the school, facilities, and faculty. Many schools take appointments for visiting and even offer tours. If the schools you are planning on attending are in a different location, it may be more difficult to visit. Some students take road trips to visit schools.

When visiting schools, be sure to have made appointments with counselors to get information and to ask questions. Counselors can help you understand your needs and what you need to do to achieve your goals. They can also help you prepare and apply to the college. This is a good time to ask any questions you may have regarding tuition, retention, and so on.

Ask about Job Placement

For students interested in being employed right after college, it is very important to inquire about job placement and the percentage of students who actually get jobs. Some schools have recruitment events when students can meet with representatives from different companies. If employment is a concern, your goal is to go to the school that has a good reputation in placing students in the workforce. This is important for both undergraduate students and graduate students who plan on working right after they graduate.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Funding for education is an important deciding factor for most students. Majority of students take out loans to pay for college while others receives grants or scholarships. When a school is not accredited, students cannot benefit from the school in many ways. For example, you cannot get financial aid, transfer to another college, have certain classes transfer and count at another college, and you may not get hired at certain companies. For these reasons, students must choose accredited school in order to be more successful

Whether you are applying for an undergraduate degree or graduate degree, you want to make sure that the school offers the program or major that you are looking for. Most schools require that you declare your major before applying. You may even have to provide supplemental information such as a portfolio, test scores and other material to be considered for a program. By doing your research and deciding on a career path, you will make a better choice for college.
