How to Get a Job After College

After spending thirteen to twenty years in school, college graduates must prepare for a job hunt.  Today, many people go to college to find a career they are most passionate about and to have a job that is fulfilling and rewarding.  It is no longer just about the pay for most people but also the job itself.

College helps people realize what makes them happy, provides knowledge and teaches professional skills to enter the work force.  It is up to the individual to follow his career plans and secure a good job right after college.  Finding the right job is as overwhelming as applying for the right college. By having a clear plan, you can ultimately reach your career goals.

Internships

Preparation for a job after college actually begins during the last year of college. Some people may take a year off to gain new experiences and skills in order to successfully apply for jobs later.  The first thing to do is to find internships in order to get an understanding of the field and develop the skills for the job.  Internships are the best way to get experience after college.

Most people get internships during the last year of college while others will spend a few months after graduation interning at companies.  Internships are similar to apprenticeships.  Students work for a company or organization in return for experience.  Internships are usually unpaid but students can receive college credit and other forms of compensation.  An internship is an ideal experience to have on a resume in order to get a job.

Organizations and Career Center

While still in school, be sure to become a member of at least one organization or club to give yourself an edge.  You may also consider getting a part-time job in a company related to your career in order for you to gain some transferable skills.  Employers want to see leadership skills and being part of an organization can express that.

A great place to get information, resources and possible opportunities is the career center at your college.  The career center offers resume-writing guidance, job leads, internship leads, workshops, a job board, interviewing assistance, career fairs, and so on.  The goal of the career center is to prepare students for the job market.

Network

One of the most important steps you can take is building a network of contacts.  You can obtain contacts through your school, internships or public events.  By putting yourself out there and talking to professionals in your industry of study, you will have a higher chance of getting a job offer.

Create a Job Search Plan

Without a clear plan with set goals, it can be difficult to get a job after college.  It is easy to fall off track once you have graduated.  You must maintain motivation and desire to go forward with your career.  Once college is over, you are on your own and have to make more important decisions. In your job search plan, set goals for looking for jobs every day or week and applying to them.  Some people allocate two hours every day looking at job boards and applying.

The job search plan should also tell you where to look for jobs.  Online job boards, classifieds, company websites, and career centers are the most effective sources of finding job openings.  Additionally, you may include an overview of your skills and qualifications to have at hand when searching for jobs.  The job search plan should also indicate the time you need to spend on creating a resume, writing cover letters and establishing a personal brand.  Every now and then, you may have to update your resume before sending.  By having goals, you will stay dedicated and maintain motivation.

Establish Your Personal Brand

When you begin to develop your resume, which will include your education, internships and other relevant experiences, you must establish a personal brand.  In other words, you need to assess your qualities, skills and achievements thus far and put emphasis on where you shine.  Part of brand development is knowing the needs of companies in which you are applying for.  You must tailor your resume to these needs and present yourself as the ideal person for the job.  You must also create a cover letter that expresses what you can do for the company.  Do not make the mistake of sending one standard resume to every company.  Instead, make some tweaks to your resume to fit the needs of the position.

Part of your job search plan should be finding resources to help you prepare for interviews.  The interviewing stage is an important one where you will have one more chance to sell yourself.  Always follow up after interviews to leave a lasting impression. Once you get job leads, apply to companies and start setting up interviews, you will become closer to finally landing your first career job out of college.
