Planning Ahead for a Layoff

A layoff is always a possibility when it comes to the career world. Therefore, it is wise to plan ahead. According to most financial advisers, you need to save six months' worth of your salary in order to keep floating in case of a layoff. If you have a family and are the main wage earner, however, you will need more than that. Here are ways to help you deal with a layoff by planning ahead.

  • Notice your daily spending habits. Most people concentrate on the mortgage and huge payments. The weekly grocery bill and smaller expenses matter, too, because they quickly add up. Further, you can regulate these areas. Correct your excessive shopping habits.
  • Start budgeting. To keep balance in your life, maintain a budget. It will help you spend money more wisely. Include entertainment and outings as long as you can afford them.
  • Consider the severance package. You will probably be offered severance when you are laid off. The best time for negotiations is when you were initially hired. You can still negotiate during the time of termination.
  • Find out about unemployment programs. This complication in your career does not signify the end of your life. There is a new job waiting for you, and governmental programs can help you until you get to your new employment. Take advantage of unemployment insurance, as well as training programs in the face of a layoff.
  • Consider ways to work your interests or hobbies into a part-time job. Always remember that looking for a job will be your full-time job when you are laid off. Therefore, a part-time job should be flexible enough to support your full-time job search.
